A Redundant connection is a connection over a combination of at least two fiber optic cables that are independently realized via different routes.
The goal is to increase availability of the connection and the service that it facilitates. For example, if one cable is damaged all services can continue using the secondary cable.

Redundancy increases the availability of your Internet connection. That's why it's good to know that the DataWeb network is created almost completely redundantly, between our equipment at the pickup points and our clients' locations. That means that if something should go wrong with one of the optical fiber cables between our equipment, all traffic that would usually follow the fallen-out connection can now be redirected using a second, redundant connection. Our clients will experience virtually no disruption in the service.
The business fiber optic connections from network to client locations is non-redundant, as standard. However, it is possible to create a redundant connection with a corporate location. In order to do so, two seperate fiber optic connections must be made using seperate routes and pipes. Otherwise, a single excavation mistake by a third party could destroy both connections at once. The two connections enter the location at different places, and CPE can be delivered in duplicate.
A back-up connection is a reasonable alternative to a redundant connection. It is more cost-efficient and uses two different networks much like a redundant connection.
